REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is one of the five distinct stages of sleep; the others being NREM or non-rapid eye movement sleep. REM sleep is significant because of the various physiological changes it affects on a sleeping individual, and the fact that most vivid dreams occur during REM In all of us, you'll find the following 5 brainwaves: Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta. Each brainwave has a distinct purpose and helps us behave, think, move and process. Although they channel automatically, it's our own ability to modulate between them that determines how well we cope with pressure, rational and irrational thoughts, task. So during an average night's sleep, a person will experience about four or five cycles of sleep. Stages 1 and 2 are periods of light sleep from which a person can wake up easily. During these stages, eye movements slow down and eventually stop, heart and breathing rates slow down, and body temperature decreases. Stages 3 and 4 are deep sleep.
